An ideal session to explore handbuilding and develop your sense of form, volume, and texture. You’ll learn how to construct strong, harmonious pieces using pinching, slab building, coiling, and joining techniques. We’ll focus on controlling thickness, creating solid connections, and adding details designed to stand the test of time.
You’ll take part in the entire process, from construction through decoration and glazing.
You may create up to 12 pieces during the session (depending on your pace and technical considerations). Your finished pieces will be ready for pickup a few weeks later, once all firings have been completed by the studio.
Course outline:
Weeks 1 & 2: After an introduction to the fundamentals of handbuilding and a demonstration, you will be guided step by step in shaping your pieces by hand (pinched pots) or using tools such as rollers, cutters, and knives.
Week 3
You will refine your pieces through finishing touches, carving, and surface decoration.
Week 4
You will decorate your pieces using underglaze drawing techniques or by dipping them in glaze.
Time is set aside at the end of each session to clean the workspace and the tools used.
